First Arab Winter School for Astrophysics

We are pleased to announce the First Arab Winter School for Astrophysics (FAWSA) that will take place in Cadi Ayyad University, Marrakesh, Morocco from Monday, November 28th to Saturday, December 3th, 2016.
FAWSA is supported by the Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Through a grant to the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in collaboration with Cadi Ayyad University. FAWSA will provide a platform for astrophysics knowledge sharing, triggering collaborations between fellow Arab astrophysicists, and building a strong professional Arab community in the field.

The scope of this winter school covers the following fields:
  • Solar System and Exoplanets
  • Solar Physics
  • Galactic Astronomy: Stars, Stellar Clusters, Nebulae, SNR and ISM
  • Extragalactic Astronomy: Galaxy Formation and Evolution, and Cosmology
  • Observational Astronomy: HRA, Adaptive Optics, Site Testing.
  • Meteoritics and Impact cratering: Meteorites and Impact craters in Arabic countries
  • Technical Tools: Python, IDL, Iraf, and Remote Observatory

Accommodations:
All on desk registrations will take place on Sunday 27 November 2016 from 15:00 to 19:00 at the University Club.
Classes will be held at amphitheater 10 , Faculty of Sciences Semlalia , University Cadi Ayyad of Marrakech.
Accommodation is provided on two sites: Tichka hotel, with which the organizing committee has negotiated special rates and University Club.

Financial Support:
We will be able to provide a full or partial financial support for a number of selected participants (depending on the funds). Therefore, all applicants are encouraged to ask for the support in the case that they (or their universities) cannot fund their participation. Full financial support for 15 students from the Arab countries (with 1 student/country) will be available; a limited number of partial supports will also be available. The financial support is assigned based on the financial need and scientific merit of the candidates.
In order to qualify for financial support, the applicant must provide and submit the following information by 5 July, 2016 :

  • A cover letter
  • Your comprehensive CV
  • Two signed recommendation letters (to be sent directly by the person who recommends you to this address: fawsa@ar-as.org)
  • A Short motivation statement (explain why it's important for you to attend FAWSA and briefly state your expectations from this summer school)

Fees:
The winter school fee is 300 EUR per participant. The fee covers registration, lodging at University Club House, school material, lunches and coffee breaks during the winter school days, shuttle bus services, and a trip to the Oukaimeden observatory. The fee does not cover, telecommunications usage, private transport, or any other personal expenses. Registration will not be confirmed until payment is received.

Official Diner:
A financial contribution of 30 Euros will be requested from participants who wish to participate in this Gala Dinner.

Oukaimeden Observatory Visit:
A participation fee of 20 euros will also be requested for those who register for this visit.
